Having returned to education in 1994 and completing the BTEC 1st Diploma in Information Technology with distinction marks in almost all subjects Alan was given the opportunity to go directly to the BTEC Higher National Diploma and admission to the Univeristy of Brighton.

Alan’s 1st year on the HND continued at the Hastings Collect of Arts and Technology (HCAT) under the tutelage of Trevor Sheldrake and the excellent team. The 2nd year allowed choice of specific subjects, and with a keen programming sense in low level languages, Real Time Systems (RST) was the perfect choice.

During 1996 and 1997 Alan continued his studies and part time jobs to be able to continue his studies. We was then blessed with the additon to our family of Paul in December, who quickly began helping on those overnight coding and end of semester projects.

Its never too early to start learning – Programming Ada83 on a Pentium 1, 133MHz series processor. Timetable is visible in the background! (c Dec 1996)

Alan continued to focus on his group work, providing the 68000 assembly for a token ring network with CSMA/CD based on the designs of the team, as well as completing his individual projects on websites with Javascript/Java, and his C / Real Time Systems Design exams. I’m still very greatful for all the help and support I had from the University and my teams mates at this time.

Having completed the HND, Alan seeked employment, after 6 years of cleaning jobs, a professional career start in an office was an excellent way to complete the HND and I started work here as a 1st Line Helpdesk Agent.

All credit and thanks must goto my wife Monica who inspired me to return to education, despite having no GCSE’s at ‘O level’ passing grade, Monica could see my potential and not only encouraged me, supported me and blessed me with a lovely son during this time. Thank you my lovely wife <3
